POCUS Ultrasound
Many general imaging ultrasound systems could adequately provide what your facility needs in bedside ultrasound. However, more POCUS focused systems have been developed to meet the growing demand for portable, bedside ultrasound imaging.
POCUS ultrasound systems offer some benefits over traditional ultrasound machines. For example, they are much more portable and can be used in a variety of clinical settings, such as emergency departments, intensive care units, and even in the field for military and disaster medicine. This allows for quicker diagnosis of a wide range of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, lung conditions, and abdominal and gynecologic conditions, as patients can be scanned at the bedside without the need for transportation to a radiology department. In addition, they are much more cost effective.
Though a very valuable tool for healthcare professionals, POCUS is not without its limitations. Typically, the images produced by POCUS machines are generally not as detailed as those produced by traditional ultrasound machines, and the interpretation of the images may require more expertise and experience.
1. Hand-held Ultrasound Scanners:
These are portable, lightweight devices that can be easily carried to the bedside for use in a variety of clinical settings. Examples include the Butterfly IQ, Sonostar Wireless, Clarius Wireless, Interson, and the GE Vscan.
2. Bedside POCUS Ultrasound Machines:
These are portable touchscreen devices that are typically mounted on wheels or set on the tabletop and can be moved from room to room within a healthcare facility. Examples include the Mindray TE5, GE Venue Go, and the Terason 3200t.
These are just a few examples of the many types of POCUS systems available. The technology is continually evolving, and new systems are being developed to meet the growing demand for portable, bedside ultrasound imaging. Its continued development and use is likely to play an important role in the future of medical imaging and we’ll be here to keep you informed as new systems are released.
